Regulatory Disclaimer
Important legal notices regarding airport security authority, airline carriage terms, and informational scope.
1. Final Screening Officer Discretion Mandate
Under United States Federal Law (49 U.S.C. § 44901 et seq.) and Canadian Aviation Security Regulations (SOR/2012-48), the final decision on whether an item is permitted through the airport security checkpoint rests entirely with the individual Transportation Security Officer (TSO) or Screening Officer on duty.
Even if an item is generally listed as permitted in published guidelines, an officer may prohibit any item that appears modified, triggers an alarm on explosive detection equipment, creates an unresolvable X-ray shadow, or is deemed a potential safety hazard in the sterile area.
2. Airline Contract of Carriage Primacy
Security screening clearance by TSA, CATSA, or international airport screeners does not guarantee that your airline will accept the item in the aircraft cabin.
Airlines operate under private commercial Contracts of Carriage and international tariffs. An airline may impose stricter dimension, weight, quantity, or battery restrictions than government security agencies. Always verify your operating carrier's specific baggage policy prior to departure.
3. International Customs & Biosecurity Jurisdiction
Passing an airport security checkpoint does not constitute clearance for international import or export. International travelers are subject to the sovereign customs, biosecurity, and agricultural laws of their destination country (e.g. U.S. CBP, Canada CBSA, Australia DAFF).
Items permitted on domestic flights (such as certain food items, plant products, or prescription medications) may be strictly prohibited from crossing international borders. Failure to declare such items on customs arrival cards can result in severe financial fines and criminal prosecution.
